    该词和history （历史）是姊妹词，都源自拉丁语historia 'recording of past events' （过去事件的记载），且可追溯至希腊语 historia 'enquiry'（调查，探索）。不同的是，history 直接借自拉丁语，而story 则经由英国法语（Anglo-French）进入英语。12世纪法语借用了拉丁词historia,作estorie,estoire,13世纪英语又从法语借用了estorie,作story ,表示“过去发生的事”或“过去事件的记载（或叙述）”。但从17世纪以后，这些词义渐为history 所接管，story 转而多指“故事”或“（短篇）小说”，也表示“（对所发生的事的）叙述”，就是说story 常带有虚构的含义。
