It all began in 1977 with the exploration of hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor.

Hydrothermal vents are cracks in the Earth's surface that occur, the ones we are talking about here are found deep at the bottom of the ocean.

Some of the large sedentary organisms associated with vents are also found at ordinary deep-sea temperatures many meters from the nearest hydrothermal sources.
