catgut羊肠线
cat, 来自kit的拼写误用，指一种弦乐器，词源同guitar. -gut, 肠。弦乐器通常为羊肠所制，猫肠是做不出好琴弦的。
catgut肠线
catgut指制琴弦和网球拍或供外科手术缝合伤口等的肠线。古代埃及、巴比伦、希腊和罗马均用草食动物的肠，特别是羊肠，制作肠线。莎士比亚的喜剧《无事生非》中有一人物这样说道：“Is it not strange．that sheeps' guts should halesouls out of men’s bodies?”(Ⅱ．iii. 59)（几根羊肠绷起来的弦线，会把人的灵魂从身体里抽了出来，真是不可思议！）这句话多少告诉我们，用羊肠制肠线在旧时比较普遍。但用猫肠制作却未见记载。那么为什么catgut一词的字面意义是“猫肠”呢？有一种解释认为，catgut原作kitgut。其中kit既可作“小猫”解，也可作“小提琴”解。嗣后，kitgut与catting（肠线，小猫）相混糟和联系，加之初学者拉起小提琴宛如猫叫，kitgut就逐渐演变成catgut这一形式。因此可以说catgut是个误称。
