- attire服装,衣着该词源自法语。13世纪古法语动词attir(i)er‘equip,arrange’进入英语,其名词形式attire也一起被借了过来,用以表示equipment(装备),士兵身上穿的和带的亦可用它表示。到了14世纪attire及其缩略形式tire的词义演变为equipment with which an individual covers and adorns his or her body,其实就是“服装”,“衣着”,attire至今仍用于此义,但tire则不再这么用了。从15世纪起tire及其异体tyre开始用以指“轮箍”,到了19世纪又转指“轮胎”。英国英语拼作tyre,但美国英语则沿用原来的形式tire。
